How I’m Connecting to the Spring Equinox

Spring is in the air and in today’s video I’m going to talk about how I’m connecting with the spring equinox.
Although in the Western world, our year begins on January 1st—right in the middle of winter—to me it feels as if the year actually begins in the spring, which is when the clock resets for the natural world.
Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. The natural world starts coming back to life again, after a season of hibernation. Insects appear seemingly out of nowhere, trees start budding out and flowers start to bloom.
Winter has come to an end and it’s time for life to begin flowing again.
As the spring equinox approaches, I feel the desire to spend more time outside, and connect in person with others. I find myself walking around, staring at the ground, watching little flowers spring up from the earth—and as I do, I do my best to learn what each flower is.
I’ve also started planting the seeds that will become my future garden. I’m so excited to embark on this journey of growing my own food. I’ve done some gardening in the past, but I’ve never gardened to the extent I plan to garden this year.
Along with my desire to spend more time outside and engage in person with others, I’m thinking about my plans for the next few months. What do I want to accomplish between now and the summer solstice?
For me, this question was very easy to answer, because it’s pretty much all I think about all day every day.
My first goal is to connect with like-minded people and establish new friendships, because I’m still pretty new to town. This is the perfect time of year to do that, because everyone is coming out of hibernation, classes are starting again and groups are meeting up. In fact I’m attending a spring conference on farming this weekend and I’m super excited!
My second goal is finding a home with some acreage to purchase, so I can start my homestead. The market is just starting to pick back up, so I have a good feeling that I can make this happen before the summer solstice. Please send some good juju my way ;)
My third goal is something ongoing, that I will continue working on for the rest of my life. It’s to deepen my connection with the earth by increasing my knowledge of foraging (for those of you who may be unfamiliar with the term, that’s gathering wild plants and mushrooms for edible and medicinal uses), learning to regeneratively farm and studying permaculture.
To really start bringing these goals to life, I sat down, wrote them out and started making plans for how I will accomplish each one. This little session was me planting my seeds of intention for the next few months.
After that, I held a little ceremony, welcoming the spring and committing to my goals. I wrote each of the goals down on separate pieces of paper and then burned them, one after the other, as a ceremonious way to bring them to life. It was fun :)
I plan on checking in on my goal progress right before the summer solstice to see how far I’ve come, to make any adjustments I need to make and to plan ahead for the summer.
Now I have a question for you: Do you celebrate the spring equinox? And if you do, how does that look? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog post, I really appreciate it and I look forward to connecting with you in the next one.

Hi, I’m Kristen!
I envision a world where you and I rediscover what it is to be human, through connection with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us.
