Over the past year, I’ve been learning how to metalsmith jewelry, and recently, I’ve been spending more time in the jewelry studio, which has required that I tote my pieces to and from my house on a weekly basis.
I didn’t have a way to nicely tote my projects and tools around, so I took a trip to a local antique store and found this dusty old carpenter box, hiding in a cramped, dark booth, just waiting for me to find it and bring it back to life.
I knew that I didn’t want to buy a new toolbox for my metal smithing tools and projects, because it’s hard to find anything that’s not made out of plastic nowadays.
Quality is unfortunately no longer important in our society, where planned obsolescence has become the king of marketing strategies.
All that’s available to us is a bunch of crap that has a short lifespan, unless we spend a gagillion dollars on something that is most likely handmade by an actual craftsman or woman.
I don’t actually know how old this carpenter box is, but it’s likely at least as old as I am, and I’m 42. It seems like the 1980s was the last decade where mass producers actually cared about quality. How unfortunate for us and the planet we live on.
Hi, I’m Kristen!
I envision a world where you and I rediscover what it is to be human, through connection with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us.
